Photos appear in a grid; subfolders appear as tiles you can drill into. - View a photo - click any thumbnail. Use the arrow keys, trackpad swipes, or the scroll wheel to move between photos; hold an arrow key to scrub fast. - Press ? inside the app for the full keyboard shortcut list - almost everything has a key. ## Search - How to search - press ⌘F in any folder and type what you are looking for: what is in the photo (“red hat”, “birds”), words visible inside it (a sign, a receipt, a race number), the nearest city, a date like “October 2024”, a camera, or a file name. Put words in quotes for an exact phrase. Under the title you can switch between This Folder and All Folders, and narrow to photos with people, text, or a location. Right-click a photo for Find Similar. - Why does it say Reading or Describing? - Lumen reads your photos in the background so they can be searched, starting with the folder you have open. Names, text in photos, places and dates are ready within moments. On macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence, Lumen also writes a description of each photo, which takes a couple of seconds per photo; results grow as it goes. It waits while you browse, and you can pause it from the sidebar. - Older versions of macOS - Search works on macOS 14 and later. Written descriptions need macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence turned on; without them, Search uses the subjects it recognises, text in photos, places, dates and names. - Is anything uploaded? - no. Your photos are read on your Mac, the search index is stored on your Mac, and place names come from a city list bundled with the app (from GeoNames, CC BY 4.0), so not even coordinates leave your computer. Open the info panel (press I) to see exactly what Lumen read from a photo. ## Formats Lumen opens JPEG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, GIF (with playback and frame stepping), TIFF, BMP, PSD, EXR, and common RAW formats: DNG, CR2, NEF, ARW, RAF. If a file you care about doesn't open, email us - format support is something we actively expand. ## Lumen Pro - What's included - unlimited folders in your library, all of them in the sidebar, and one search across every one of them. Every feature of Lumen, search included, is free; the free app simply keeps one folder in its library at a time (you can still open and browse any folder). - One-time purchase - $9.99 once, no subscription, all future updates included. - New Mac or reinstalled? - open Lumen Pro from the sidebar or home screen and click Restore Purchase. The unlock follows your Apple Account. ## Common questions - Where do deleted photos go? - to the macOS Trash, and Lumen shows an Undo button right after. Nothing is ever deleted permanently by the app. - Does Lumen change my folders? - never on its own. Viewing is read-only; edits are always saved as copies next to the original unless you explicitly replace a file. - Why does Lumen ask me to open folders again after an update? - macOS security (the App Sandbox) requires apps to be granted folder access explicitly. Lumen remembers the grants you make; occasionally macOS invalidates them and a fresh Open Folder renews access. - Slideshow on a TV? - connect via AirPlay, HDMI, or Sidecar, then press T for Present mode. ## Privacy Lumen collects nothing and connects to nothing. Type the amount, tap a category, tap Save. That is the whole thing. - The switch at the top chooses Expense, Income or Transfer. The pills under it set the date and the wallet. - Add a few words if you like (“swiggy dinner”) and the category picks itself. It learns from what you filed before; a category you choose by hand is never overridden. - You can type it all as words: “chai 20”, “uber 340 yesterday”, or “+50000 salary” for income. Or tap the microphone and say it; dictation runs on your device. - The cross at the top left closes the keypad without saving. ## Wallets and balances - A wallet is a place your money lives: cash, a bank account, a credit card, an e-wallet. PennyBook asks for your first one when you start, and you add the rest in Settings → Wallets. Every entry belongs to a wallet. - A balance is what you said was in the wallet, plus everything dated since that day. Entries you fill in from before that day are history and don't change it. - If the number drifts from what your bank says, pick the wallet on the Transactions tab and tap ± beside its balance. Enter the new balance and a note if you like; PennyBook writes one visible entry for the difference, and nothing already in the book is changed. - The strip at the top of the Transactions tab shows one wallet or all of them. Open the keypad while looking at a wallet and it starts on that wallet. ## Transfers and credit cards - A transfer moves money between two of your wallets: an ATM withdrawal is Bank → Cash. It is never counted as spending or income. Transfer appears once you have a second wallet. - A credit card wallet shows what you owe. Paying the bill is a transfer from your bank into the card, not a second expense. ## Finding an entry - Tap the magnifying glass on the Transactions tab. Search covers the whole book, from the first entry, not just the month on screen. - Type a few words or an amount. Every word has to match somewhere: the title, the note, the category or the wallet. A number matches the amount exactly, so “swiggy 345” finds the ₹345 Swiggy order. - The rows under the field narrow it by Kind, Wallet, Category, Amount and Dates. Each shows what is chosen; tap one to change it. The count and the total of everything found sit above the results. - Tap a result to change it. Close is at the top left. ## Bringing your history over - Open the Import tab and choose the export file from your old app, or paste a table copied from a spreadsheet. Money Lover, Wallet, Spendee, Monefy, Cashew, YNAB, Goodbudget and PennyBook's own export are recognised; any other CSV with a date and an amount works too. - Before anything is written you see how many entries will come in, the dates they cover, and what is being skipped as a duplicate. Tap through to change which wallet or category a name lands in. - Wallets come across as they are. Categories are matched to PennyBook's own; a name with no match goes under Other, and the name is kept in each entry's note, so a search still finds it. - Every import is listed on the Import tab with Undo, which takes out everything it brought in. - The file is read on your device and never sent anywhere. ## Budget and categories - Set a Monthly budget in Settings. It is about spending only: income never refills it. The Transactions tab shows what is left, and how much a day that leaves you. - There are twenty spending categories and twelve for income. In Settings → Categories you can add your own, change a colour or symbol, drag them into order (the first seven are the keypad's tiles), or swipe one away to hide it. Past entries keep a hidden category. ## Siri and Shortcuts - Say “Log an expense in PennyBook” and tell it what you spent, such as “auto 140”. It goes to the wallet you used last, with the category it guesses. The same action is in the Shortcuts app, and on the Action button. ## Fixing and deleting - Tap any entry to change it. Swipe it left to delete it. - A deleted entry can be brought back with Undo, which stays on screen for a few seconds. ## iCloud sync - Turn on Settings → Sync with iCloud to keep the same book on your other iPhones and iPads. It uses your own private iCloud; you need to be signed in to iCloud on each device. - The line under the switch says what is happening: syncing, when it last synced, or what is stopping it. - On a new iPhone, tap Get your book from iCloud on the first screen instead of making a wallet. Your wallets and entries arrive by themselves; it can take a minute for a big book. - Turn it off whenever you like. The book stays on this iPhone. ## Widgets - Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget and search for PennyBook. There are three: this month against your budget (the medium size also lists your latest entries), the balance across all your wallets, and a tile that opens the keypad. - The same widgets can go on the Lock Screen, and tapping any of them opens PennyBook ready for a new entry. ## PennyBook Pro - Your first 100 entries are free. After that, adding a new entry asks for Pro: one payment of $19.99, and nothing recurring. - Everything else stays free, always: reading, searching, editing, deleting, adjusting a balance, exporting, erasing, and importing your history from another app. - Pro follows your Apple Account, so it covers your other iPhones and iPads. On a new device, tap Restore purchase in Settings → Pro. ## Your data - Your book lives on your iPhone and in your iPhone backups, and in your private iCloud if sync is on. Nowhere else. - Settings → Export everything as CSV saves the whole book to a place you choose. Erase everything removes it. Export and erase are free, always. - Lock with Face ID in Settings locks the book each time you leave the app, and hides it in the app switcher. - Exchange rates: PennyBook does not fetch them from anywhere. For now every wallet is in your home currency, which you set in Settings. ## Privacy PennyBook has no account, no servers of ours and no networking code of its own; iCloud sync, when you turn it on, uses your own iCloud. There are no servers of ours, no accounts, and no networking code of our own. The only thing that can leave your iPhone is your own book, into your own iCloud, and only if you turn on iCloud sync. ## What we collect Nothing. PennyBook collects no personal data, no financial data, no analytics, no crash reports, no identifiers, and no usage statistics. Not from anyone, ever. ## Your book - Your entries, wallets, balances, categories and budgets are stored on your iPhone, in the app's own storage. With iCloud sync on, a copy is also kept in your private iCloud (see below). - There is no sign-in and no bank connection. PennyBook never asks for a bank login and never talks to a bank. - If you back up your iPhone (to iCloud or to a computer), the book is part of that backup, the same as any app's data. That backup is yours, protected by Apple under your Apple Account; we have no access to it. - You can export the whole book as a CSV file to a place you choose, and you can erase everything from Settings at any time. ## iCloud sync - iCloud sync is off until you turn it on in Settings. Until then, your book stays on this iPhone. - With it on, Apple's CloudKit keeps a copy of your book in the private database of your own iCloud account, so your other iPhones and iPads signed in to the same Apple Account show the same book. It is stored and carried by Apple and protected the way your other iCloud data is. If you use Advanced Data Protection, it is end-to-end encrypted. - We cannot see it. A private iCloud database belongs to your account, and developers have no access to what is in it. PennyBook does not use iCloud for anything else. - Turning sync off keeps the book on this iPhone and stops sending changes. Erase everything while sync is on removes the book from iCloud and from every device that syncs with it; you can also delete PennyBook's iCloud data from iCloud storage in the Settings app. ## Importing and dictation - When you import the export file from another app, or paste a table, PennyBook reads it on your iPhone. The file itself is not uploaded anywhere, and only the entries you confirm are kept (and, with iCloud sync on, synced like any other entry). - The microphone on the keypad uses Apple's speech recogniser with on-device recognition required, so what you say is turned into words on your iPhone and is not sent to Apple or to us. If your iPhone cannot recognise speech on the device, the microphone is not offered. - PennyBook cannot read your messages, your bank accounts or your other apps. iOS does not allow it, and we would not want it to. ## Face ID and Siri - The optional lock uses Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode through iOS. The app only learns whether you passed; it never sees your face or fingerprint data. - If you ask Siri to log an expense, your request is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy before it reaches the app, as with any Siri request. PennyBook itself sends nothing. ## Purchases PennyBook is not yet on sale. When it is, the one-time purchase will be processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We will never see your payment details, and Apple's privacy policy will govern that transaction. ## Children PennyBook collects no data from anyone, including children. ## Changes If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
