Roost Privacy Policy

Roost is a Mac app from Papermint Studio that remembers where your windows go and puts them back. This policy explains what it does with information.

In short

Roost collects nothing about your windows or your Mac. Where your windows go, the layouts it remembers and your workspaces stay on your Mac. It goes online only for our update feed and to check your licence.

What stays on your Mac4

Windows. With your permission (Accessibility), Roost reads each window's app, title, size and position from macOS to show and restore your layouts, and moves windows when you ask or when your screens change. It never reads what's inside a window.
Layouts. Screen setups, their history, workspaces and app rules are kept as files in Roost's folder in your Library, with backups. They include your displays' names and serial numbers (to recognise them) and window titles (to match windows). They are never sent anywhere.
Safe sharing. When it's on, Roost asks macOS once a second whether anything is capturing the screen: a yes or no, nothing about what's on it or which app. Your list of private apps is kept in Roost's settings on your Mac.
Diagnostics. If you export diagnostics, the zip is saved on your Desktop with window titles replaced by codes. It goes nowhere unless you send it to us yourself.

What goes online3

Update checks. Once a day Roost downloads a small file listing the latest version from downloads.papermint.studio, and downloads the update if you choose to install it. Like any web request, this reveals your IP address to our hosting provider, Cloudflare. We don't log it or use it to identify you.
Your licence. When you activate a key, Roost sends it to Papermint (console.papermint.studio) with your Mac's name as set in System Settings and an anonymous id made from your Mac's hardware id, so one Mac counts once. Papermint checks the key with Dodo Payments, who sold it. About once a day Roost sends back the signed licence it was given, to confirm the key still stands. Nothing else. Roost has no analytics, no crash reporting and no ads, and we never see anything about your windows or your Mac.
