Whittle Privacy Policy

Effective September 2026

Whittle is built so that we couldn't see your recordings even if we wanted to. There are no Papermint servers, no accounts and no analytics. Recording, transcription, Apple Intelligence, translation and search all happen on your device.

In short

Whittle collects nothing: your voice and your notes stay on your device, and sync only through your own private iCloud if you use it.

What we collect2

  • Nothing. Whittle has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no crash-reporting tools, no third-party code and no account. We receive no personal data, identifiers or usage statistics.
  • If you have chosen in iOS to share analytics with app developers, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports. That is Apple's setting, not Whittle's.

Your recordings & notes5

  • Audio and text are stored on your device. They are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
  • Transcription runs on your device with Apple's speech engine. Your audio is never sent to a server.
  • Tidy notes, titles, tags, rewrites and answers from Ask your notes are written on your device by Apple Intelligence. Your words are not sent anywhere to do this.
  • Translation uses Apple Translation on your device. Search runs entirely on your device.
  • Words you add to Words Whittle should know stay on your device.

iCloud sync3

  • If you use iCloud, your note text (titles, transcripts, notes, tags, translations and notebooks) syncs through your own private iCloud database. Papermint has no access to it, and it is governed by Apple's iCloud terms.
  • Recordings sync only if you turn on Sync recordings with iCloud. They then go to the same private iCloud database. Otherwise they stay on the device that recorded them.
  • Apple encrypts this data; with Advanced Data Protection turned on for your Apple Account, it is end-to-end encrypted.

Apple Watch1

  • Recordings made on the Apple Watch are sent straight to your iPhone and transcribed there. They do not pass through us.

Downloads from Apple1

  • Speech language packs, translation language packs and the Apple Intelligence model are downloaded from Apple by iOS. These downloads carry no recordings or notes.

Sharing & export1

  • When you share, copy or export a note or its audio, it goes only where you send it. If you choose a folder for Export to a folder, notes are written there as Markdown files. Whittle does not keep a record of any of it.

Permissions3

  • Microphone: used only while you are recording a note, with permission you grant in iOS. Whittle does not listen in the background; it keeps recording if you leave the app mid-note, shown in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen.
  • Speech recognition: if iOS asks, it is for Apple's on-device speech engine to write out your recordings.
  • Face ID: used only to unlock Whittle when you turn on Lock with Face ID. Whittle never sees your face data; iOS only tells it whether the unlock worked.

Purchases1

  • Whittle Pro is a one-time purchase processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. Apple's privacy policy governs that transaction.

Children1

  • Whittle collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes1

  • If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
