Oriel Privacy Policy

Effective October 29, 2026

Oriel is a Mac app from Papermint Studio for screenshots and screen recordings. This policy explains what it does with information.

In short

Your screenshots, recordings and everything read from them stay on your Mac. Papermint collects nothing about you or what you capture.

What stays on your Mac5

  • Your captures. Screenshots, recordings, Studio projects and markup are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/Oriel, and copies you save go to the folder you choose. Oriel never uploads them.
  • The words inside them. Oriel reads the text in each capture with the Mac's own text recognition, and sorts captures with Apple's on-device models, so search can find them. That text is kept in Oriel's folder on this Mac. You can turn reading off in Settings › Library.
  • Your voice. Captions and transcripts are made on your Mac with its own speech recognition. Camera, microphone and the Mac's sound are recorded only while you record, into files on this Mac.
  • Keys pressed. If you turn on Keys pressed, Oriel notes the shortcuts you type during a recording, only to show them in that video. Nothing is kept outside the recording's project.
  • The MCP server. If you turn it on, coding agents and AI apps on your Mac that you connect can capture your screen and read what's on it through Oriel. What they do with it is up to them and their own policies. The server answers only on a local socket on this Mac, never over the network, and is off until you turn it on. With Hide private details on, emails, keys, tokens and card numbers are covered before an agent sees a capture.

What goes online3

  • Your licence. When you activate a key, Oriel sends it to Papermint (console.papermint.studio) with your Mac's name as set in System Settings and a hashed id made from your Mac's hardware id, so one Mac counts once. About once a day it sends back the signed licence it was given, to confirm the key still stands. Papermint checks the key with Dodo Payments, who handle the payment. See our studio privacy policy for buying and the licence console.
  • Update checks. Sparkle, the updater, downloads a small file listing the latest version from downloads.papermint.studio, and the update itself if you choose to install it. Like any web request, this shows your IP address to our hosting provider, Cloudflare. We don't log it or use it to identify you.
  • Nothing else. Oriel has no analytics, no tracking, no ads and no account. No capture, recording or text read from them is ever sent to us.
