Getting started4
- Install. Download Wren, open the .dmg and drag Wren to Applications. It needs macOS 26 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
- Two permissions. The welcome asks for the Microphone, which Wren uses only while you hold your talk key, and Accessibility, which lets it hear the talk key in any app and paste your words where your cursor is.
- Pick a talk key. fn (the Globe key) is the default. You can also use Right Option, Right Command, ⌥Space or any key of your own, in the welcome or later in Settings › Talk key.
- Say hello. Click into any text field, hold the key, talk, and let go. Your words are typed where the cursor is.
Talking6
- Hold to talk. Hold the talk key while you speak and let go when you're done; Wren types what you said.
- Hands-free. Tap the key once and Wren keeps listening until you tap it again. Prefer one tap to start and one to stop every time? Pick Press to start in Settings › How it works.
- Cancel. Press Esc while Wren is listening to throw away what you're saying. Turn this off in Settings if Esc means something in the app you use.
- The card under your cursor. While you talk, a small paper card opens just under your text cursor. With Apple Speech your words appear in it as you speak; the other voices show Listening… and then the result.
- Your clipboard is safe. Wren pastes your words and then puts back whatever you had copied. Put the clipboard back and Space after are in Settings.
- The menu bar. The feather in the menu bar opens a small panel with the last thing you said and Copy it.
Voices6
- Everything runs on your Mac. Each voice is a speech model that downloads once (from Hugging Face, or from Apple for Apple Speech) and then works offline.
- Parakeet v2 (NVIDIA, English) is the default: the fastest and most accurate in our tests.
- Apple Speech is built into macOS, knows about 30 languages and shows your words as you talk.
- Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages. Phonon-2 is a compact English model. Whisper Small, Base and Large v3 Turbo know 99 languages.
- The first use can be slow. The first time you use Phonon-2 or Parakeet, macOS prepares the model for your Mac, which can take a few minutes. After that it starts at once.
- Remove a voice from the Voices page to get its disk space back. You can download it again later.
Tidying7
- What it does. Tidying is on by default, for English. It takes out um and uh and false starts, keeps your corrections ("Friday, no wait, Thursday" becomes Thursday), and writes numbers, times, money, email and web addresses properly ("katherine at google dot com" becomes katherine@google.com).
- Spoken commands. Say new line or new paragraph to break the text. Say scratch that to remove the sentence before it.
- Quick or Smart. Quick uses rules and is instant. Smart uses S1-mini by Superwhisper, a 1.5 GB download that runs on your Mac.
- Styles. Casual reads like a quick text, in lower case. Relaxed adds capitals and commas. Standard writes full sentences ("I'm going to be late."). Formal also spells out contractions ("I am going to be late.").
- Lists and mail. Three or more items in a row become bullets. In mail apps, a message gets a greeting, body and sign-off as separate paragraphs.
- Code editors and terminals. There Wren only removes what you didn't mean, and leaves the rest as you said it.
- See what Wren heard. In the Journal, any entry can show what Wren heard before tidying.
Words and names2
- Words Wren listens for. Add names, places and jargon on the Words & names page. Apple Speech and Whisper listen for them; Parakeet v2 can't be taught words, so use a fix for those.
- Fixes. A fix says "when Wren hears this, type that", like paper mint → Papermint. Fixes work with every voice.
The journal3
- Everything you said. The Journal lists what you dictated, by day, with the app you were in. Search it, copy an entry, see what Wren heard before tidying, or delete an entry.
- Your week. Words said, minutes of typing saved (compared with typing at 40 words a minute), words a minute, days in a row, words each day, and the apps you talked in.
- Only on this Mac. The journal is one file in your Library (~/Library/Application Support/Wren/journal.json). Turn off Keep a journal in Settings to stop saving, or Clear the journal to delete every entry.
When something doesn't work7
- fn opens emoji or Apple's dictation. Open System Settings › Keyboard and set Press 🌐 key to Do Nothing. Or pick another talk key in Wren's Settings.
- Your words are typed twice. Another dictation app (Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, MacWhisper and others) is listening for the same key, so one press starts both. Since 1.0.1 Wren tells you when one is open and offers Use Right Option or Quit it. Or give one of the two apps a different key.
- Wren doesn't type anything. Turn on Wren in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. If it's already on, turn it off and on again, then quit and reopen Wren. Without Accessibility, Wren leaves your words on the clipboard to paste yourself.
- Nothing is heard. Check that Wren is allowed in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone, and that the right microphone is picked in Wren's Settings › Microphone (Same as your Mac follows macOS).
- "Your microphone sent only silence." Wren heard a microphone that sent nothing at all. Check that it isn't muted, that a MacBook's lid is open if you use its built-in microphone, and that the right one is picked in Settings › Microphone.
- The first dictation takes a while. The first use of Phonon-2 or Parakeet prepares the model, which can take a few minutes. Later ones are quick.
- Words come out wrong. Add the word on Words & names, or add a fix. For other languages, pick a voice that knows them on Voices.
Buying and licences8
- Try it first. Everything works for 7 days from the first launch.
- Pay once. $9.99 for one Mac, or $19.99 for up to three, with every future update included. Buy from the sidebar's Buy or Settings › Licence; the payment is handled by Dodo Payments.
- After the trial the journal still opens, so you can find and copy what you said. Dictating needs a licence.
- Activating. After checkout Wren opens with your key filled in; press Activate. Or paste the key from the Dodo Payments email into Settings › Licence.
- Moving to another Mac. Press Deactivate… in Settings on the old Mac, or remove that Mac at console.papermint.studio, then activate on the new one. Reinstalling on the same Mac doesn't take another place.
- All your licences are at console.papermint.studio (also Wren › Manage Licences…): your keys, the Macs each is on, and your receipts.
- Refunds. Ask from your receipt at console.papermint.studio or through the Dodo Payments email, or write to hello@papermint.studio.
- Offline is fine. Wren checks its licence about once a day when it's online, and keeps working for 30 days without a connection.
Updates3
- Automatic. Wren checks for a new version by itself and installs it when you choose; your journal, words and settings stay as they were.
- Check now from Wren › Check for Updates….
- Signed updates. Every update is signed by us and notarized by Apple, and Wren refuses anything that isn't.
