Getting started7
- What you need. Unfurl runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later. It is coming soon to the App Store.
- Write a line. Tap the write bar at the bottom of Today, type what happened and send it. While you type, the chips above the keyboard set what kind of line it is: Note, Highlight, Idea or Number.
- Say it instead. Tap the microphone in the write bar and talk. Speech is turned into words on your device.
- Change or delete a line. Tap a line to edit its words, kind, time or photos. Long-press it and choose Delete; Unfurl asks first, because a deleted line can't be brought back.
- Other days. Swipe the week strip at the top of Today to go to another week, and tap a day to open it. A dot under a day means you wrote something.
- Any day, years back. Tap the date at the top of Today, or the calendar button beside the gear. Pick a year (or one you wrote in), a month, then the day. Today brings you back.
- The tabs. Today is the page you write on, Month shows the month as a calendar, People lists everyone and every tag you wrote about, and Search looks through the whole journal. Settings is the gear at the top of Today.
The filled-in day10
- What it shows. Each day has a Your day card with what your iPhone already knows: steps, sleep, workouts, time in daylight and mindful minutes from Apple Health, the photos you took that day, the day's calendar events, and the weather and the towns you were in.
- Turn it on. Open Settings › Fill each day from and switch on Health, Photos, Calendar and Weather and places, one by one. Each switch asks iOS for access the first time. Turn on only the ones you want.
- Weather and places. The towns come from where that day's photos were taken, and from a rough note of where your iPhone was (about a kilometre), taken once a day while Unfurl is open and kept on the device. The weather for that place comes from Apple Weather.
- Moments from your day. Tap the ✨ button beside the write bar. Apple's journaling suggestions show moments your iPhone noticed, like a workout, a place, people you were with or a song. Pick one and it becomes words in the write bar to finish. iPhone only.
- Read on the device, never kept. Unfurl reads these when a day is shown. Nothing is copied into your journal, so turning a source off removes it from every day at once.
- Sleep and time in daylight need an Apple Watch. The Health app records them from a watch. Without one, those two stay empty, and steps and mindful minutes still show.
- Sleep belongs to the morning. A day's sleep is the night before it, so last night's sleep shows on today's page.
- A number looks wrong? Unfurl shows what the Health app has for that day. Check the same day in the Health app; if it's different there too, the source (your watch or iPhone) recorded it that way.
- I said no to a permission. The switch says "Access is off in the Settings app" with an Open Settings button. For Photos, Calendar and Location, allow it there and come back. For Health, open the Health app, tap your picture, then Apps and Unfurl.
- The filled-in day is part of Unfurl Pro, and free for your first 14 days.
Mood, On This Day and the month5
- Mood. Pick how the day felt on Today, from five levels: Rough, Low, Okay, Good and Great. One mood per day; tap another to change it.
- Mood in Apple Health. Switch on Settings › Apple Health › Save mood to Health and each day's mood is saved to Health as that day's State of Mind. Changing or clearing it in Unfurl changes it in Health too.
- On This Day. When you wrote on this date in an earlier year, Today shows it, and Month shows one year ago.
- Month. A calendar tinted by how much you wrote each day, with days written, entries, your streak and who came up. Tap a day to open it.
- Search. Type words, an @person or a #tag. Results come from the whole journal, grouped by month.
Photos in entries3
- Add a photo to a line. Tap the photo button in the write bar, or Add photos when you edit a line. The day's own photos come first, then the rest of your library.
- Links, not copies. An entry points to the photo in your Photos library. If you delete the photo from Photos, it leaves the entry too.
- Photos in entries are part of Unfurl Pro, and free for your first 14 days.
Import from Day One6
- 1. Export from Day One. In Day One, choose Export › JSON. It makes a .zip file; save it to Files.
- 2. Unzip it. In the Files app, tap the .zip to unzip it. Inside is a folder with a .json file named after your journal.
- 3. Import. In Unfurl, open Settings › Your journal › Import from Day One and pick that .json file.
- What comes over. Each entry's text, date and time. Starred entries become highlights, and Day One tags become #tags. Photos stay in Day One, because they are files inside its export.
- Importing twice is safe. Entries already in Unfurl, with the same time and text, are skipped, and Unfurl tells you how many were added and skipped.
- "That file isn't a Day One export". You picked the .zip or another file. Unzip the export first and pick the .json inside.
Export2
- Export as Markdown. Open Settings › Your journal › Export as Markdown. Unfurl makes one file, "Unfurl journal.md", with a heading for each day, its mood, and a line for each entry with its time. Photos stay in your Photos library. Save it to Files or send it anywhere.
- Export is always free, and so is writing, so your words never get locked behind Pro.
Free trial, Pro and Family Sharing6
- Your first 14 days have everything. No sign-up and nothing to cancel. After that, Unfurl keeps working and only the Pro parts wait for Pro.
- Free for good. Writing without limits, the four kinds of line, @people and #tags in your text, the month, search, dictation, mood, the lock, reminders, widgets, On This Day, Day One import and Markdown export.
- Unfurl Pro. $14.99 once (shown in your local currency), with no subscription. It adds the filled-in day (Health, Photos, Calendar, weather and places, and Moments), photos in entries, people pages and iCloud sync. Open Settings › Unfurl Pro to get it. Payment is handled by the App Store.
- Restore purchase. On a new iPhone or iPad, or after reinstalling, open Settings › Unfurl Pro and tap Restore purchase. Pro follows your Apple Account.
- Family Sharing. Unfurl Pro is shared with your family. If you use Family Sharing with purchase sharing on, everyone in the family gets Pro on their own device, with their own private journal.
- Refunds. Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
iCloud sync5
- On from the start. Sync is on when you first open Unfurl. Open Unfurl on your other iPhone or iPad, signed in to the same Apple Account, and the same journal shows on both. Switch it off in Settings › iCloud; your entries stay on the device.
- After the trial. Sync is part of Pro. If the trial ends without Pro, sync pauses and every entry stays on your device; Settings says so, and Pro turns it back on.
- Your own iCloud. The journal goes to the private part of your iCloud account. Papermint can't read it.
- Not syncing? Check that you're signed in to iCloud in the Settings app, with the same Apple Account on both devices. If iCloud isn't reachable, Unfurl keeps writing on the device and syncs later.
- iCloud sync is part of Unfurl Pro, and free for your first 14 days.
Face ID lock4
- Lock your journal. Open Settings › Privacy and turn on Face ID (or Touch ID or passcode, depending on your device). Unfurl locks each time you leave it and hides your page in the app switcher.
- Turning it off asks first, so someone holding your unlocked iPhone can't turn it off.
- iPhone search. Entries can be found from the Home Screen search (swipe down and type). While the lock is on, they're kept out of search. Switch it off in Settings › Privacy › Show in iPhone search.
- The switch is grey? Set a passcode in the Settings app first. The lock uses your device's own Face ID, Touch ID or passcode.
Evening reminder3
- Turn it on. Open Settings › Reminder and switch on Evening reminder, then pick a time. iOS asks once whether Unfurl may send notifications.
- It skips days you already wrote. If there's a line on today's page, no reminder comes that evening.
- No reminder arrives? Check Settings app › Unfurl › Notifications. If notifications are off there, Unfurl says so under the switch.
Share into Unfurl3
- From any app. In Safari, Notes, News or anywhere with a Share button, tap Share and pick Unfurl (the first time, it may be under More).
- Change it first. Shared text arrives in quotes, a web page as its title and link. Add your own words, mark it a Highlight if you like, and tap Add.
- Where it goes. The line lands on today's page the next time you open Unfurl. Links in your entries open in Safari when tapped.
