Unfurl Privacy Policy

Effective October 2026

Unfurl is a daily journal from Papermint Studio. There are no Papermint servers, no accounts, no analytics and no ads. Your journal is written and kept on your device, and synced only to your own private iCloud (you can switch sync off).

In short

Unfurl collects nothing: your journal stays on your device and your own private iCloud, Health, Photos and Calendar are read on the device and never sent, and weather is asked of Apple with a rough location only.

What we collect2

  • Nothing. Unfurl has no accounts, analytics, advertising, tracking or third-party code. We receive no personal data, no usage statistics and no identifiers. Its App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.
  • Unfurl has no crash reporting of its own. If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports under Apple's own terms.

Your journal6

  • Your lines, their kind and time, the @people and #tags in them, each day's mood, the photos you add to entries and any contact cards you link to people are stored on your device, in the app's own storage. With iCloud sync on, a copy is also kept in your private iCloud (see below).
  • For a person you link to a contact, Unfurl keeps that card's full name, birthday and a small copy of its photo. It gets only the card you pick, through Apple's contact picker, and never reads the rest of your contacts.
  • A photo in an entry is a link to the photo in your Photos library, not a copy.
  • Your settings (which sources are on, the lock, the reminder time, sync) are kept on the device too. So is a small summary for the widgets: what you wrote today and your streak.
  • If you back up your device to iCloud or a computer, the journal is part of that backup, like any app's data. That backup is yours, protected by Apple under your Apple Account; we have no access to it.
  • You can export the whole journal as a Markdown file whenever you like, for free.

Health, Photos and Calendar7

  • Each source is off until you turn it on in Settings › Fill each day from, and iOS asks for your permission first.
  • Health. Unfurl reads steps, sleep, workouts, time in daylight and mindful minutes. It writes only one thing, and only if you switch on Save mood to Health: each day's mood, as that day's State of Mind.
  • Photos. Unfurl reads which photos you took on a day, to show them on that day and to let you add them to entries.
  • Calendar. Unfurl reads the day's events to show them on that day. It never adds or changes events.
  • All of this is read on your device when a day is shown. It is never copied into your journal, never synced and never sent to us or anyone else. Health data is never used for advertising or shared with anyone.
  • Moments. The ✨ button opens Apple's Journaling Suggestions. Apple shows the suggestions on your device; Unfurl receives only the one moment you pick, as words in the write bar.
  • Turn a source off in Unfurl, or take away its permission in the Settings app, and it stops showing at once.

Weather, places and location4

  • Weather and places is off until you switch it on, and iOS asks for location first (only while Unfurl is in use).
  • Once a day, while Unfurl is open, it notes roughly where your iPhone is, rounded to about a kilometre. That note stays on the device and is never synced or sent to us.
  • To show a day's weather, Unfurl asks Apple Weather (WeatherKit) for that place and date. Town names are looked up with Apple Maps. Both are Apple services under Apple's privacy policy; Papermint receives nothing.
  • Places also come from the locations stored in that day's photos, read on the device.

iCloud sync5

  • iCloud sync is on from the start and can be switched off in Settings › iCloud; your journal then stays on the device. Sync is part of Unfurl Pro after the 14-day trial.
  • With it on, Apple's CloudKit keeps a copy of your journal in the private database of your own iCloud account, so your other iPhone or iPad on the same Apple Account shows the same journal. It is stored and carried by Apple and protected the way your other iCloud data is.
  • We can't see any of it. A private iCloud database belongs to your account, and developers have no access to what is in it.
  • Health, Photos, Calendar, weather and location facts are never synced; each device reads its own.
  • You can delete Unfurl's iCloud data from iCloud storage in the Settings app.

Dictation1

  • The microphone in the write bar uses Apple's speech recogniser on the device, so what you say is turned into words on your iPhone or iPad. It listens only while the microphone is on.

Permissions7

  • Health, Photos, Calendars and Location are asked for only when you switch that source on. Health also asks before Unfurl may save moods, only if you switch that on.
  • Microphone and Speech Recognition are asked for the first time you tap the microphone. You can say no and type instead.
  • Face ID is asked for only if you turn on the lock. The app only learns whether you passed; it never sees your face or fingerprint data.
  • Notifications are asked for only when you turn on the evening reminder. The reminder is a local notification scheduled on your device; nothing is sent to us to create it.
  • Unfurl asks for nothing else: no access to your contacts (a contact you link is picked in Apple's own picker) and no tracking.
  • iPhone search. Entries are added to the search index on your device so you can find them from the Home Screen. It stays on the device, and is emptied while the Face ID lock is on or if you switch it off.
  • Share into Unfurl. What you share from another app waits on your device until Unfurl opens and adds it to today's page.

Siri, Shortcuts and widgets2

  • If you ask Siri to add a line, your request is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy, as with any Siri request. The line is written on your device, and Unfurl itself sends nothing.
  • Widgets show what you wrote today and your streak, and may appear on the Lock Screen. Remove them whenever you like.

Purchases2

  • Unfurl Pro is a one-time purchase processed entirely by Apple through the App Store, with StoreKit. We never see your name, Apple Account or payment details, and Apple's privacy policy governs that transaction.
  • The 14-day trial is kept on your device. Nothing about it is sent to us.

Children1

  • Unfurl collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy1

  • If Unfurl ever handles data differently, we will update this page and its effective date before that version of the app is released.
