Tacet Privacy Policy

Tacet is a Mac app from Papermint Studio that keeps a history of what you copy and hushes the secrets in it. This policy explains what it does with information.

In short

What you copy never leaves your Mac, and Tacet's own process can't go online at all. Papermint collects nothing about you or your clipboard.

What stays on your Mac5

What you copy. Tacet keeps your copies in one file in ~/Library/Application Support/Tacet, locked with AES-256. The key to that file is kept in your login Keychain. You choose how long copies are kept, and Forget all… clears them.
Fingerprints of keys. To notice keys still in use after a while, Tacet keeps a salted fingerprint of each key, never the key itself, in the same folder.
The clipboard log. For Overheard, Tacet reads macOS's own clipboard log on your Mac to see which apps wrote to or read the clipboard. It's read on the Mac and never sent anywhere.
Shell history. Hooks and the history scan run on your Mac. Backups of cleaned history files stay in Tacet's folder.
Accessibility. Tacet uses it to paste a picked copy and to notice ⌘V for Ask before pasting. It doesn't read what's on your screen.

What goes online4

Not Tacet itself. The moment it opens, Tacet's own process is placed in a kernel sandbox that denies every network connection. Settings has a button that tries to connect, so you can see macOS refuse.
Your licence, through a helper. A small helper inside Tacet that never sees the clipboard talks to Papermint (console.papermint.studio). When you activate a key it sends the key, your Mac's name as set in System Settings and a hashed id made from your Mac's hardware id, so one Mac counts once. About once a day it sends back the signed licence it was given, to confirm the key still stands. Papermint checks the key with Dodo Payments, who handle the payment. Update checks. Sparkle, the updater, downloads a small file listing the latest version from downloads.papermint.studio, and the update itself if you choose to install it. Like any web request, this shows your IP address to our hosting provider, Cloudflare. We don't log it or use it to identify you.
Nothing else. Tacet has no analytics, no tracking, no ads and no account, and we never see what you copy.
